London, the vibrant capital of England, is a city rich in history, culture, and diversity. With its iconic landmarks, world-class museums, and lively streets, it offers something for every traveler. If you are someone who loves history, art, or simply wants to explore, London has a wide range of attractions that should not be missed. Here’s a guide to the top 10 must-see sites when visiting this amazing city.

1. The British Museum

General Admission is free, a pre-booked ticket is required.

The British Museum is a treasure trove of human history and culture. It houses over eight million works, including the famous Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles. The best part? Admission is free! This makes it accessible to all visitors.

The museum's extensive collection spans thousands of years and continents. For example, their Egyptian collection is one of the largest in the world, featuring over 100,000 artifacts. Make sure to explore the temporary exhibitions as they often showcase unique themes and artifacts, making each visit unique.

2. The Tower of London

On my bucket list.

No trip to London is complete without a visit to the Tower of London. This iconic castle has served as a royal palace, prison, and treasury over the centuries. Today, it houses the Crown Jewels, which include the Koh-i-Noor diamond and the Imperial State Crown.

Guided tours led by the Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters, bring the Tower's rich history to life. They offer entertaining stories that combine history with a touch of humor. Did you know that the Tower has housed some infamous prisoners, including Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes?

3. Buckingham Palace

Viewing the Changing of the Guard ceremony is a free event but come early it will be packed., Buckingham Palace tickets vary by season and are more expensive in the summer.

Witnessing the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace is a must. This iconic royal residence is the official home of the British monarch and is surrounded by stunning gardens.

During the summer months, visitors can tour the State Rooms, where you can view the lavish furnishings and artwork that illustrate the royal lifestyle. The Changing of the Guard ceremony occurs at 11:00 AM daily and is a quintessentially British spectacle.

4. The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben

I love Big Ben it is a London icon.

The Houses of Parliament, known for its striking Gothic architecture, is one of London's most recognized landmarks. The adjacent clock tower, commonly called Big Ben, is a must-see.

While admiring the structure from the banks of the River Thames is excellent, consider taking a guided tour of the interior. This not only allows you to explore the historic rooms but also provides insights into the UK's political system. Approximately 40% of all visitors to London include this landmark in their itinerary.

5. The London Eye

I am a bit of a chicken when it gets to heights but will try the next time.

For unforgettable views of the city, a ride on the London Eye is essential. This giant Ferris wheel provides spectacular views of London’s skyline, including landmarks like St. Paul's Cathedral and the Shard.

Magic happens at sunset when the city glows in golden light. To skip the long waits, especially in peak seasons, consider booking a fast-track ticket. Over 3.5 million people experience the London Eye each year, making it one of the most popular attractions in the city.

6. The Tate Modern

This is my absolute London favorite. I have been several times and have not viewed all the sections yet. Special exhibitions require a ticket.

Art lovers will find a sanctuary at the Tate Modern, one of the world’s leading contemporary art museums. Set in a former power station, it features an impressive collection from artists like Picasso, Warhol, and Hockney.

Admission to the permanent collection is free, with temporary exhibitions often showcasing innovative art. In 2019, the Tate Modern attracted over 6 million visitors, solidifying its status as a key cultural destination.

7. Covent Garden

Lovely place for a cup of afternoon tea and biscuits.

Covent Garden is a lively area famous for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The historic market offers boutique shops and talented street performers, making it a perfect spot to relax.

Don’t miss the Royal Opera House, where you can enjoy a performance or admire its stunning design. Additionally, the London Transport Museum here provides an engaging look at the history of transport across the city, featuring over 80 vehicles in its collection.

8. The Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum is free, pre-book your ticket though.

The Natural History Museum is a great spot for families and anyone interested in the wonders of the natural world. The museum's highlights include dinosaur skeletons and the exquisite Hope Diamond.

The building itself is an architectural wonder with intricate details and a grand entrance. It's also free to enter, offering a budget-friendly option for families wishing to explore while learning about our planet's history.

9. Borough Market

Plan a visit to one of London's finest market, Borough Market is located at 8 Southwark Street around the corner from the Tate. Borough Market offers a vast selection of food from all corners of the world.

Go early when the market opens at 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM because later, seating is limited and it is standing room only to eat.

Our personal favorite is: Mushroom Risotto.

Experience 'Tina - The Tina Turner Musical' it is simply the best.

No visit to London is complete without experiencing the West End's vibrant theater scene. This area is known for its theaters, showcasing a range of performances from musicals to classic dramas.
